Harry Von Tilzer, whose other hits include "Wait Till the Sun Shines, Nellie," "A Bird in a Gilded Cage" and "Under the Yum Yum Tree," wrote songs during a time when sentiment was a hot commodity. Devotion to Mother was a pet theme of his, and his most successful expression of those pre-Freudian values was this great sing-along gem written in 1911 (the birth year of the Old Kunnel's own dear old Dad.) During World War II, a more cynical generation changed the title of the song to "I Want a Girl Just Like the Girl That Married Harry James" (who happened to be married at the time to Betty Grable.) The Old Kunnel remembers other words also, e.g., "I want a beer just like the beer that pickled my old man. (grin)

Incidentally, Von Tilzer, who is credited with inventing the term "Tin Pan Alley," is among the most prolific of all composers in the Songwriter's Hall of Fame. He was also one of the first songwriters to start his own publishing company, an enterprise upon which he embarked in the early 1900s.

When I was a boy my mother often said to me,
Get married boy and see, how happy you will be,
I have looked all over, but no girlie can I find,
Who seems to be just like the little girl I have in mind,
I will have to look around until the right one I have found.

I want a girl just like the girl
That married dear old Dad.
She was a pearl and the only girl
That Daddy ever had.

A good old fashioned girl with heart so true,
One who loves nobody else but you.
I want a girl just like the girl
That married dear old Dad.
